Among the findings in the National Association for College Admission Counseling’s  annual 2012 State of College Admission: Class rank and interviews have dropped in importance while strength of curriculum continues to be of critical importance. And while the data show many ways that the process has become less predictable, they also show that the vast majority of colleges remain decidedly noncompetitive
